The best decision I have ever made

I created Fat2fabulous after fielding many emails and calls each week asking for information and advice on weight loss and fitness. Im not a qualified dietician or personal trainer and have failed many times before, but I can share my experiences, meal plans, hints and tips that I have learned along the way.

My journey is ongoing and I will need to work on this for the rest of my life. A lasting commitment to lifestyle change is the only way to permanant weight loss. In March 2010 I was a size 24, BMI of over 47 and diagnosed with severe morbid obesity. My body fat % was 52%. I suffered with chronic severe back pain, often bedridden for days at time following two back surgeries. I was also diagnosed with insulin resistance and an underactive thyroid. Despite my obesity, I was an expert in most fad diets, and lived an endless cycle of yoyo dieting for 20 years.

In February 2010, I consulted an orthapedic surgeon for my chronic back pain and his diagnosis was shocking. I was facing spinal reconstruction surgery from L3 to S1 (basically from middle to lower spine) or to lose 65kg. The means to achieve this had to be lasting, permanent and drastic and I decided to have weight loss surgery in June 2010. Making the decision was easy, however the journey has been challenging and rewarding each and every day, and it was without doubt the best decision I have ever made. The pain, recovery, ongoing challenges have been all worth it, but weight loss surgery is NOT a quick fix. Compliance to a restricted diet and dedication to lifestyle changes by committing to regular exercise is the only way you will be successful with surgery and in fact any weight loss program.

Weight loss is not rocket science, we need simply need to burn more calories than we consume. The problem is it isn’t simple!! we underestimate portion sizes and caloric value of food and we dont have a real understanding of how much we need to exercise to burn off the food we consume! I look forward to sharing what I have learned on the rollercoaster of my weight loss journey!
